Litigation Attorney

This role offers the opportunity to assume first chair responsibility representing clients, primarily in estate disputes and commercial litigation in state and federal courts, but cases may involve other areas of the firm’s practice.  The work is deliberately collaborative so that litigation strategy and its implementation evolves from thoughtful engagement with both attorney colleagues and staff.


Responsibilities:

  • Trial and appellate court appearances, including evidentiary presentations, hearings, oral arguments, and conferences with judges and opposing counsel.
  • Draft pleadings, memoranda, briefs, and motions, including motions for summary judgment and enforcement of discovery with minimal oversight and direction.
  • Take and defend depositions of plaintiffs/defendants and fact witnesses.
  • Must have strong research and analytical skills and be able to research substantive and procedural issues pertinent to each case.
  • Must be comfortable communicating with clients, including status updates and cooperative engagement on case strategy and discussion of options.
  • Billable hour commitment of 1100-1500 hours annually.
  • Reasonable business development activities through community engagements.

Requirements:

  • Admission to the New York bar.
  • Juris Doctor from ABA-accredited law school.
  • Civil litigation experience preferred, but transferable litigation experience, such as service as a prosecutor or public defender is acceptable.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated competence with legal research and case management software.
  • Familiarity with typical video platforms for depositions, court conferences, and hearings (g., Zoom, TEAMS)
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage competing case priorities.
  • Willingness to engage in and develop understanding for cases involving new areas of knowledge.
  • A high level of professionalism, conscientiousness, and responsibility.
  • Must be able to take ownership of files and exercise independent legal judgment on questions of case preparation and legal strategy.
  • Manifest a positive, flexible, and cooperative attitude with colleagues and staff.

 Benefits:

  • Full-Time, typically in office, court or client engagement daily.   Remote work permissible as occasioned by client or family necessities.
  • Pay period every two weeks.
  • Salary: $90,000 to $140,000, commensurate with Firm’s tiered compensation plan and flexible billable hour commitment.  Additional compensation can be earned for originated work.  Discretionary annual bonus based on productivity.
  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance in accordance with Firm policies, and with pre-tax deductions.
  • HSA – when enrolled in the firm health insurance high-deductible plan, firm presently contributes $700 annually to an HSA.  This amount is prorated based on the start date.
  • HRA – Health Reimbursement Account.  Firm presently reimburses plan participants for all expenses incurred above deductible up to the out-of-pocket maximum. 
  • FSA – Dependent care available.  Firm does not contribute to this.
  • 401k and Roth 401k Safe Harbor Match -  Firm matches 100% of the first 3% contribution and match 50% for 3-5% contribution.  If you contribute 5% to 401k – firm match is 4%.
    • Safe Harbor Match is 100% employee funds starting on day 1.  There is no waiting to be vested in the firm contribution
    • No waiting period to contribute to 401k
  • Monthly firm social opportunities for informal interaction among attorneys and staff, including birthday and work anniversary celebrations, Firm “cook-offs” (soup, chili), St. Patrick’s Day celebration, and other holiday parties.
