Joseph A. Platania Featured Speaker at Bar Association Continuing Education Seminar

Apr 9, 2015

On March 27, 2015, Joseph A. Platania was one of several featured speakers at a Monroe County Bar Association Center for Education seminar sponsored by the Trusts & Estates Section.  Mr. Platania joined a panel of private attorneys and officials from the Monroe County Surrogate’s Court to talk about the process of becoming a court-appointed guardian.

Part 36 of the Rules of the Chief Judge of New York State require that certain judicial appointments, including appointments of guardians, be made from lists established by the Chief Administrator of the Courts.   In order to be placed on the list, individuals must apply and complete a certification course.  This course was designed to satisfy the criteria for appointment.

The Surrogate and his staff discussed the role of a guardian.  Mr. Platania, and the other experienced members of the panel shared their knowledge and insight as court-appointed guardians.  Over the course of his long and distinguished career, Mr. Platania has served as a court-appointed guardian on many occasions, and he finds this work has been some of the most professionally rewarding experiences.

Mr. Platania has been with the firm since October 2004. He is counsel to his many long time clients who require legal assistance in all areas of estate and trust administration, business succession planning for individuals and closely held and family owned enterprises, general corporate matters including asset sales and purchases, entity formation and dissolution, commercial real estate transfers, leasing, land use development and finance and municipal matters.   He has also served as attorney for several municipal entities and Fire Districts.
