Mikal J. Krueger of MCCM to Co-Moderate at the 21st Annual Western New York Bankruptcy Conference
Jun 3, 2025
This year marks the 21st annual conference to be held at the historic Genesee Country Village and Museum in Mumford. Since the first event in 2004, the conference has been a joint collaboration of the Monroe County Bar Association’s Bankruptcy Committee and the Bar Association of Erie County’s Commercial Litigation & Bankruptcy Law Committee. The Western District of New York Bankruptcy Courts are located in Buffalo and Rochester. Traditionally held in and around Batavia, representing the midpoint of the 2 courts in the Western District, the inaugural conference was held at the old Batavia Party House. Over the intervening 20 years, the conference has been held at various Batavia hotel conference centers, as well as the campus of Genesee Community College. This year’s conference marks the third appearance at the Village and Museum in Mumford.
As the chair of the MCBA Bankruptcy Committee, I will again serve as co-moderator with my counterpart from Buffalo, attorney Beth Ann Bivona. The conference is an important educational resource for practitioners across the Western District, which includes the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier regions in addition to the greater Buffalo and Rochester regions. As an approved continuing legal education event, attendees will receive 7 credits towards the required number of hours that admitted attorneys must complete each bi-annual reporting cycle. The conference assists practitioners with staying up to date on cutting edge issues in the law. Lawyers must keep up with the constant changes in the world, legislation, and new issues. Additionally, the conference provides a crucial in-person networking opportunity for attendees. Since COVID, most appearances in the bankruptcy system are remote – either by Zoom or telephonic hearings. This in-person event allows practitioners, judges and other professionals to discuss current topics and trends in person, as well as to catch up on life in general.
This single day conference is split into several panels in the morning, with joint sessions after lunch. The morning panels focus on either consumer or business topics and run concurrently. In the afternoon, the joint panels include ‘ask the judges’, ethics, and case law updates. This year’s conference features over 20 speakers with unmatched insights and knowledge into the effective practice of bankruptcy law. Just a sample of the topics this year include effective motion practice, Chapter 11 issues, out of court workouts (a/k/a avoiding having to file bankruptcy), Chapter 13 practice, and Subchapter V small business cases. This year’s ethical panel will deal with issues surrounding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the practice of law. Overall, this year’s conference should be another great event!
